The Anglo-Dutch garden in the age of William and Mary, 2246 p.145 no.12, p.124-126 First Edition in octavo format of this extraordinarily rich Dutch book on eighteenth-century landscape gardening and topography. It remains the "important source for the spectacular development of country life along the Vecht" (Anglo-Dutch Gardening in the Age of William and Mary), which contains 98 engraved views drawn after nature by Daniel Stoopendael of the estates along the Vecht river, in the province of Utrecht. By the end of the seventeenth century the Vecht had surpassed the Amstel as the most fashionable location for a country house in Holland. In the octavo edition, one plate appears on two leaves; in the folio edition, published in the same year, two plates appear on one leaf. The work illustrates 41 different estates, plus twelve other town and country views. Twelve plates give a comprehensive record of the Petersburg estate and its garden (designed by Simon Schijnvoet) which featured trimmed hedges and fountains in the Louis XIV style.
