This work, with its elaborate typography and numerous woodcuts, can be seen both as the summit and the culmination of late medieval historiography in the vernacular in Cologne. Its target audience was likely the patrician ruling class of the city of Cologne, as the work is primarily intended to instil pride in their own city and expresses a strongly loyal attitude towards the Empire and the Emperor. Furthermore, the chronicle conveys ethical and moral standards in politics and appeals to the social responsibility of those in power in both state and church. Owing to reformist theological tendencies, the author is now believed to have been an Augustinian monk from a Cologne monastery. The sources drawn upon included the standard works of medieval universal historiography, including Hartmann Schedel’s chronicle which had been published shortly beforehand, as well as the entire body of local history of Cologne written in Latin and the vernacular, and theological writings, particularly those of Augustine. Heinrich von Beeck’s *Agrippina* served as a model for the structure and style. For the last quarter of the 15th century, the author also drew on his own personal knowledge.
