Introduction

The study of painting in the Middle Ages stands much to
gam from more systematic attention to manuscript illu-
mmadon. Whereas most medieval panel paintings and
wall decorations have suffered gready from the destruc-
tive effects ofHght and other detrimental influences, books
from the period are often preserved in an astonishingly
fresh state. Book illuminations have also suffered far less
from restoration than have paintings of other kinds.

In quantity as well as condition, the miniatures in
manuscripts surpass by far the extant specimens of other
forms of medieval painting. This is especially true of the
Northern Netherlands, where so many art treasures -
pardcularly those on display in churches and monasteries
- were lost during the religious turmoil of the second half
of the sixteenth century.

Most scholars feel that manuscript illumination has
been relatively neglected in the study of medieval paint-
ing, especially in the Netherlands. Foremost among the
reasons for this are the very factors responsible for the
superior condition and better rate of survival of minia-
tures: their preservation between the protecting covers of
codexes on the shelves of libraries that are themselves not
always easy of access. No more than a few of the many
masterpieces of medieval manuscript art have been pub-
lished in complete facsimile, including text as well as
illustrations. In the extensive literature on miniatures,
many - but by no means all - important manuscripts
have been described, and their illuminadons reproduced.
In most cases, however, the reproductions represent only
a selection from the miniatures in a particular manu-
script. Very seldom is an adequate picture given of the
minor painted decoradons which are so characterisdc of
book art in the Middle Ages. This dearth of published
material, especially of reproductions, has stood in the
way of a systemadc study of book illumination as a
branch of medieval painting.

The present pubHcation is addressed direcdy to that

and decorated manuscripts in Utrecht University Library,
with entries on their illuminadon and decoration, icon-
ographie descriptions and, above all, many illustradons.
Lvery representadon with an idcndfiable subjcct is illus-
trated, and a large sampling is offered of other forms of
decoradon.

The collection

The manuscript collecdon in Utrecht University Library
contams approximately 700 medieval codices, over half
of which were once in the libraries of the many monas-
teries and five chapters of the medieval bishopric of
Utrecht.' As the see of a diocese embracing the largest
and most important part of the Northern Netherlands,
the city of Utrecht was the region's unchallenged reli-
gious and cultural capital until well into the sixteenth cen-
tury. As such, it was naturally the source and repository
for the most important written and ardsdc documents of
the area.

With the victory of the Reformadon over the old
faith this posidon came to a fairly abrupt end. Much of
the contents of Utrecht's rich libraries was undoubtedly
destroyed or stolen during the turmoil that preceded that
victory, and during the administrative hiatus that fol-
lowed it. Not all was lost, however, and those who now
wielded power - the newly Calvinist town government
- attempted to save what they could from the Utrecht
collections. As part of the confiscadon of all ecclesiasdcal
property, in 1581 Utrecht laid the foundadons for a city
library (of which the present University Library is the
direct descendant) by requisidoning all books still remain-
ing in the libraries of the monasteries and chapters. Due
to all kinds of chicanery, principally on the part of the
chapters, it was not undl 1584 that the new Hbrary for
the burghers of Utrecht could be opened in the choir of
the church of the chapter of St. John. At its incepdon,
the library owned approximately 600 manuscripts and
early printed books, nearly all from the libraries of the
former monasteries. Naturally enough, the main empha-
sis is on theology. Four categories are particularly well
represented: the Latin Church Fathers; the twelfth- and
thirteenth-century scholastics; Bibhcal exegesis; and,
above all, mysdcal, ascedc and contemplative tracts of
the final quarter of the 14th and the 15th century. The
texts of these manuscripts were inspired by the move-
ment known since the 15 th century as the devotio modema
or Modern Devotion, whose impact on Dutch religious
life was immense. The relatively large number of manu-
scripts of this kind in the Utrecht monastic libraries was
typical of Northern Netherlandish collecdons, and is not
found in other parts of Europe.

Most of the inidal acquisidons came from the equally
large libraries of the Carthusians and the Regular canons.
Sdll in the collection arc 145 manuscripts and 68 bindings
containing printed works from the Carthusians and 144
manuscripts and 70 volumes of printed matter from the
library of the Regulars. These holdings consdtute the
two largest undispcrscd book collccdons to have sur-
vived from the Dutch Middle Ages. Despite the fact that
they are not the complete libraries of their respecdve
monasteries, they provide us with the most reliable im-
pression we have of the contents and status of Dutch mo-

nastic libraries of the 15th century. Because a high pro-
portion of the manuscripts were written in the monaster-
ies themselves, the surviving examples allow us to trace
the evolution of book production in these monastic
scriptoria, which were the two most important in 15th-
century Utrecht.

A third collection from a monastic library now in
Utrecht University Library, that of St. Paul's Abbey,
numbers 32 manuscripts.

A different situation prevails with regard to the libraries
of the five Utrecht chapter houses. Within the organiza-
tion of the church, the status of the chapters was quite
distinct from that of the monasteries. Thanks to their
greater autonomy, the chapters had been largely success-
ful in protecting their property from the claims of the
city government. Many of their books disappeared un-
derground during the Reformation. In later years, some
of the chapters even reopened their own hbraries with
the consent of the local government. These survived
through the early years of the 19th century, until the dis-
solution of the chapters in 1811. The last remnants of the
once so richly stocked ecclesiastical hbraries of Utrecht
were transferred to the University Library in the 1840s.
Eventually, through one route or another, the University
Library acquired two manuscripts from the chapter of St.
John, three from that of St. Peter, ten from the Cathedral
chapter and 37 from the chapter of St. Mary.

The chapter hbraries were broader in scope than those
of the monasteries. Apart from the theological works
which here too were in the majority, there were many
more legal books, which the canons needed in the exer-
cise of their administrative tasks. The quahty of the manu-
scripts is also generally higher, particularly in the case
of the library of the chapter of St. Mary. Two of the
University Library's most important illuminated manu-
scripts, nrs. 57 and 76 in this catalogue, came from here.
This is also the only one of the monastery and chapter
hbraries from which a number of hturgical works have
survived (nrs. 6, 10, 11, 42, 48, 57, 58, 91, 100, 114 and

115).

Besides the manuscripts originating in the libraries of
the monasteries and chapters of Utrecht, the collection of
the University Library has been augmented over the cen-
turies by donations and bequests, as well as by its own
purchases. Today it has the considerable total of some 700
medieval manuscripts. The purchases have affected the
makeup of the collection. In particular, most of the four-
teen books of hours included in this catalogue were
bought by the Library in the course of the 20th century.

The scope of this catalogue

The first challenge faced by the compiler of a catalogue
like the present one is to decide which manuscripts to in-
clude. How, in other words, do we define an illuminated
or decorated manuscript? In order to keep arbitrary
choices to a minimum, we have adopted two formal cri-
teria. The first almost goes without saying: the catalogue
includes all manuscripts which contain one or more min-
iatures, historiated initials or marginal illustrations.

The second criterion for inclusion was a kind of lower
limit: in order to be eligible, a manuscript had to contain
some form of decoration other than decorated initials. In
practice, this led to the acceptance of all manuscripts with
any kind of marginal decoration, even if it is no more
than a simple baguette or a so-called 'J-list' (e.g. figs. 80
and 143). Not included were manuscripts whose non-
textual elements consist only of tables, diagrams or math-
ematical figures.

The strict application of these formal criteria would
have meant the exclusion of a number of manuscripts
which have interesting and important decorated initials
but which happen not to have any border decoration.
Taking into account the recent rise of interest in penwork
decoration and initial ornamentation, it was decided to
include about 20 manuscripts whose decoration consists
solely of initials, even though they fell outside the hmits
of our two criteria. Among them are a number of 12th-
century manuscripts (nrs. 2, 4, 7, 9 and 162), some whose
undisputed locahzadon and/or dating make them valua-
ble to research into penwork (nrs. 23, 46, 65, 81, 83, 85,
90, 105, no and 149), and nrs. 50, 75, 86, 175 and 176.

Although it undoubtedly meets our criteria, the 9th-
century Utrecht Psalter - unquestionably the most fa-
mous manuscript in Utrecht University Library (MS 32)
- has not been included here. Not only would the des-
cripdon and illustration of all 166 drawings contained in
this Carolingian manuscript have occupied a dispropor-
tionately large part of the catalogue, it would also have
brought with it an element of imbalance because of the
isolated position of that manuscript within the Library's
collection. Moreover, the unique drawings in the
Utrecht Psalter have already been described in the com-
mentary volume accompanying the recent facsimile edi-
tion.^

The manuscripts are catalogued by country of origin,
and within each country by date. In the few cases in
which it is clear that the decoradons or miniatures were
executed in a different place from the text (e.g. nr. 141),
the illumination is given precedence. Unless there are
definite grounds for supposing that illumination and
manuscript came from different places, it is assumed
that they came from the same region.

Considering the genesis of the collecdon, it is hardly
surprising that most of the illuminated and decorated
manuscripts - 134 of the 181 - are from the Northern
Netherlands. No fewer than 84 were made in Utrecht or
can be attributed to that city with a fair degree of cer-
tainty. Of the remaining 50, seven have origins along the
river IJssel, five in the southern part of the Northern
Netherlands and 17 in Holland.

In addidon to the 134 illuminated manuscripts from
the Northern Netherlands, the catalogue includes 47
manuscripts originating elsewhere. Sixteen of these (nrs.
13 5-151) come from the Southern Netherlands, modern
Belgium. Among them are three manuscripts with min-
iatures and/or historiated initials from one of the fa-
mous focal points of book illumination, the Bruges-
Ghent region. They are a book of hours with eight min-
iatures on inserted leaves (nr. 141); an impressive and

richly illustrated manuscript of St. Augustine's De civitate
Dei of about 1465-1474, probably from Ghent (nr. 142);
and the still unpubUshed Dutch translation of De consola-
tione philosophiae by Boethius, written in Bruges in 1470
and provided with three miniatures by Loyset Liedet or a
follower (nr. 143). Ten manuscripts were made in France
(nrs. 152-161); seven in Germany (nrs. 162-168), includ-
ing one that may have been made in Basle (nr. 164); ten
in Italy (nrs. 169-178), including eight humanist manu-
scripts; and finally three from Greece and Byzantium
(nrs. 179-181).

Manuscripts from the Northern
Netherlands, especially Utrecht

When we think of illuminated and decorated manuscripts,
what comes to mind first are books of hours and other
richly illustrated luxury manuscripts made for wealthy
patrons. Indeed, these are undoubtedly the most opulent
and spectacular examples of Northern Netherlandish
book illumination at its peak, between the late 14th cen-
tury and the beginning of the i6th.3 Because the origins
of the Utrecht University Library were in monasdc
scriptoria, manuscripts of the kind were at first under-
represented. In the intervening centuries, a fair number of
opulent manuscripts have been added to the collection,
so that it now contains work by all of the most important
illuminators of the period, with particularly good exam-
ples from the first half of the 15th century. The so-called
Master of the Morgan Infancy Cycle, active in Utrecht
or, more probably, Delft, worked on a book of hours of
about 1415 which also contains miniatures by the Master
of the Passion of Mary of Guelders (nr. 25). A striking
product of the following years is a manuscript written
and most probably illuminated in Utrecht to the order of
Otto van Moerdrecht and donated by him to the Carthu-
sian monastery (nr. 27). The miniatures were painted by
an artist whose hand can also be discerned elsewhere as
well and who is called, after this manuscript, the Master
of Otto van Moerdrecht. Recent research has related him
to a group of masters of varying degrees of competence
active mainly in Utrecht between about 1420 and 1460.
Among the many manuscripts attributed to them arc
most of the so-called Utrecht History Bibles.

The Master of Zweder van Culemborg, who probably
worked in Utrecht from about 1415 to 1450, is represent-
ed in three manuscripts: a book of hours (nr. 37), a man-
uscript of the Confessions of St. Augustine from the li-
brary of the Carthusians (nr. 39), and a single leaf from
the famous Egmond Breviary (nr. 38). One of the most
important and interesdng manuscripts in the collcction,
the Pondfical of the Chapter of St. Mary of about 1450
(nr- 57), was illuminated by an ardst widely considered
the leading Dutch miniaturist of the ccntury, the Master
of Catherine of Clcves, who also probably worked in
Utrecht.

In the second half of the 15th ccntury, the role of
Utrecht as a centrc of book illuminadon seems gradually
to have been taken over by towns like Leiden, Haarlem
and Delft. Among the works from this period in the col-
lection are a book of hours commissioned about 1460 by
Jacobus Johannes IJsbrandus, a canon of the Cathedral
chapter, and illuminated by the Master of Gijsbrecht van
Brederode (nr. 68), another Utrecht ardst; a missal of
about 1490 by one of the so-called Masters of the Dark
Eyes (nr. 119); a book of hours dated 1507-1508, illumi-
nated (and written) by a painter-scribe who signed him-
self Spierinc (nr. 131), who worked in the surroundings
of Haarlem; and a book of hours from the beginning of
the 16th century with miniatures by one of the Masters of
the Suffrages, who probably worked in Leiden (nr. 133).

Although there is certainly no lack of luxury manu-
scripts, generally made to the order of laymen, the main
emphasis in this collecdon lies on another type: the skil-
fully executed and soberly illuminated monastic manu-
script which, with its dignity and imposing dimensions,
became the standard for the production of l?ooks in the
Northern Netherlands of the 15th century, ^ork of this
kind, produced by a large number of rehgious founda-
dons, was mainly destined for the monasteries' and con-
vents' own libraries. The lay houses of the Brethren (and
Sisters) of the Common Life also created such manu-
scripts (e.g. nr. 80) both for their own libraries and to
order ('pro predo'). In general, however, the Brethren
speciahzed in manuscripts of more modest dimensions
and appearance, mostly in the vernacular.

Although less richly illuminated than manuscripts
made for wealthy patrons, these monastic manuscripts im-
press one with their balanced layout, carefully and medc-
ulously executed script, and elaborate decoration with
penwork initials and borders (e.g. figs. 189 and 353). The
opening page was often singled out for special treatment,
sometimes in the form of a historiated initial containing a
portrait of the author (e.g. figs. 164, 228 and 330).

No fewer than 55 of the 84 'Utrecht' manuscripts in
this catalogue were demonstrably made in Utrecht mon-
asteries; of these, 13 came from the Carthusian monastery
and 37 from the community of the Regular canons.
These numbers underline Utrecht's leading role in book
producdon and illustradon in the Middle Ages. This was
attained not only through the efforts of the Regulars, the
Carthusians and other clerics, but also through the activi-
ties of the many laymen who worked in the city both
as scribes and as illuminators. The published evidence
evokes a picture of individual artists working alone or in
collaboration, in an ever-changing succession ofjoint ven-
tures. Artists like this were likely to have been responsi-
ble for the largc-scale producdon of loose miniatures for
binding into books written in other ateliers, even distant
ones. In this context many scholars have pointed to the
prohibition by the city authorities of Bruges in 1426 of
the import of miniatures, particularly those from
Utrecht.

Our impression of this lively sector of Utrecht book
production is to some extent reinforced by the Utrecht
archives, as incomplete as they are for this period. The
most informative source is the Buurspraaklweken. With
some interruptions, these contain, besides resolutions and
decrccs, a rccord of all persons registered as new bur-
ghers of Utrecht from 1385 to 1579. Of the individuals
whose occupations arc mentioned, which was done only

by way of exception, seven are listed as illuminators:
Roeloff de Visch (1390), Jan van Meerlo (1398), Loef van
Benscoep (1403), Willam Engelsman, quot;s Doemdekens
knecht' (servant of the dean of the Cathedral chapter)
(1413, but in 1415 stripped of his rights as a burgher),
Henric Henries Soen (1433), Godevaart Jacobs Soen
(1434) and a certain Michiel (1488). None of them can be
linked to a known manuscript or a name of convenience.
However, a search of the recently compiled index of
names of burghers of Utrecht in the period 1306-1579,
which covers several minor sources in addition to
the Buurspraakboeken, turned up two addidonal names
which, much to our amazement, can be attached to the
illumination of extant manuscripts.^

The first is Michiel van der Borch, who was entered as
a new burgher in 1322, his occupation being given as 'die
verhchter' (the illuminator). This is undoubtedly the Mi-
chiel van der Borch who in 1332 signed the first known
dated miniature in the Northern Netherlands, in a manu-
script of the Rijmbijbel of Jacob van Maerlant (The
Hague, Rijkmuseum Meermanno-Westreenianum, MS
10.B.21). While van der Borch has long been known as
the earliest Netherlandish artist to whom an extant work
can be assigned with certainty, until now nothing definite
could be said about where he worked. It is now safe to
assume that the Rijmbijbel, or at least its illumination, was
made in Utrecht. In any event, van der Borch's appear-
ance in the records is proof that miniature painting was
not unknown in Utrecht in the first half of the 14th cen-
tury, earher than has hitherto been supposed.

We know of the famous illuminator Willem Vreland
that he worked for a while in Utrecht before he moved
to Bruges in or shortly before 1454- What we did not
know was that in 1449 he registered as a burgher in
Utrecht as 'Willam Backer van Vrede(r)lant, verlichter'.
The discovery of this reference provides us with the
artist's surname, which may help attach more documents

to his scant biography.

Apart from the nine illuminators, up to about 1530 at
least 27 scribes, four bookbinders, 17 parchment-makers
and four paper merchants are idendfied as such in the reg-
ister of new burghers of Utrecht. Since most of the en-
tries mendon no occupation, the other names almost cer-
tainly conceal more artists and craftsmen. Concerning
nadves of Utrecht no statisdcs of this kind have been
gathered, but it stands to reason that, in order for the city
to attract as many professionals in the book trades as it
did, there must have been even more on the home front.

In this light, it is not surprising that Utrecht was one of
the first towns in the Low Countries to see the emergence
of printing with movable type. The earliest dated printed
books in the Northern Netherlands were printed there in
1473 on the press of Nicolaas Ketclaar and Gerard de
Leempt, while the scarce examples of'prototypography'
must probably also be attributed to Utrecht. To this evi-
dence can now be added a remarkable entry in the Buur-
spraakboeken. On 3 September 1468 a new burgher was
registered as 'Peter Dyrcxs. die beeldedrucker' (the
picture-printer). Although a 'picture-printer' need not
have been involved with the producdon of books or
block-books (though this can certainly not be ruled out),

this entry provides us with the earliest known reference
to a printer in the Northern Netherlands. At the least, it
supports the contention that Utrecht was producing not
only miniatures but also some kind of printed art, such as
woodcuts and engravings. Coming at a moment when
scholars have started paying increased attenrion to the
close reladons and mutual interacdon between graphic
art and book illumination, the new find provides evi-
dence underlining the crucial role of Utrecht in this field
as well.

Descriptions of illuminations and
decorations

The illuminadons in the 181 manuscripts included in this
catalogue are described on two levels: representations
with identifiable subjects are provided with an icono-
graphical descripdon, while decoradons of a lower order
of specificity are ranked under a number of purely formal
categories.

With regard to iconography, it was not considered
sufficient to use vague terms such as 'Crucifixion' or 'Na-
dvity'. Instead, we elected for a more penetrating identi-
ficadon. So as not to become bogged down in complex
terminological and descriptive complications, we decid-
ed to adopt the Iconographical Classification System
Iconclass, which is gaining increasing international ac-
ceptance and is being used on a steadily larger scale. If one
looks ahead to the pooling of catalogue information
from different sources, such considerations are impor-
tant.

Iconclass presents an existing, carefully worked out
system geared to works of art. It is a system of a priori
definitions of objects, persons, situations and abstractions
that have a visible form or to which a visible form has
been given. Every definition is related to a corresponding
numerical code within one of nine categories: (i) Reh-
gion and magic, (2) Nature, (3) Human beings, man in
general, (4) Society, civihzation, culture, (5) Abstract
ideas and concepts, (6) History, (7) the Bible, (8) Litera-
ture, (9) Classical mythology and ancient history.

All definitions follow a logic of increasing precision.
Under category 7. the Bible, for example, one finds 73:
New Testament; 73 D: Passion of Christ; 73 D 3: Christ's
arrest, trial and torture; 73 D 32: Trial of Christ, Christ
before his judges; 73 D 32 3: Christ before Pontius Pilate;
and 73 D 32 33: Pilate washing his hands in innocence. In
the case of comphcated and compound representations it
is thus possible to do justice to all the sub-themes and de-
tails by combining codes and descriptions from various
categories and using auxiliary numbers (key numbers).'^

The Iconclass-based entries in this catalogue are aug-
mented by the following information given in parenthe-
sis (): the dimensions of the miniature or historiated ini-
tial, the Iconclass code or codes and a reference to the
illustration.

An extensive alphabetical index (the Index of Ico-
nography, pp. 53-60) is provided for access to all the
themes, names, objects and details described. Cross-
references and multiple entries under different head-

words have been included to facilitate systematic search-
es. Thus, for example, events from the life of Christ can
be found not only under the headings of the events
themselves but also under 'Christ'.

An Index of Iconclass Numbers (pp. 61-64) has been
added to permit systemadc searches on the basis of the
numerical categories of Iconclass itself

Representadons with identifiable subjects, all of which
have been reproduced, are divided into the following
categories:

A - Miniatures

A' - Drawings related to the text, such as tombstones,

surgical instruments, groundplans, etc.
B - Historiated initials with an illustration relating to
the text

B' - Historiated initials with an illustration unrelated to
the text, such as human figures (grotesque or other-
wise), fabulous animals, etc. Exceptions are initials
with dragons executed in penwork, which occur
pardcularly frequently in Utrecht manuscripts (e.g.
figs. 166 and 331). These initials are catalogued un-
der categories E-H.
C - Marginal scenes related to the text, including coats
of arms

The rest of the decoration has been divided into catego-
ries D-1. In most cases one or more examples of each cate-
gory in a manuscript have been reproduced:

D - Border decorations. The occurrence of drolleries
within this category is stated at all times, the most
important being described
E - Elaborated and/or painted decorated initials, with

pen-flourishes in the margin
F - Decorated initials, with pen-flourishes in the mar-
gin

1 - Miscellaneous, e.g. drawings on paste-downs, in-
serted engravings and woodcuts, etc.

For each category (A-1), the number of items is specified,
with references to the relevant leaves in the manuscript.
Where for any Reason a complete specification did not
seem useful - as in the case of recurrent routine decora-
tions in categories D-H - rough quantifications are pro-
vided, such as 'several' (as a rule, between five and ten) or
many' (as a rule, more than ten), with references only to
leaves illustrated in the present catalogue.

With manuscripts of such varied origin, date and qual-
ity it has not always been easy to apply these categories
consistendy and uniformly. Decoradons deserving a
complete listing within the context of the illustration
scheme of one manuscript might in another case merit no
more than a selection. For the same reason, it is not al-
ways possible to draw sharp boundaries between catego-
ries E and G on the one hand and F and H on the other.
A type of inidal that in one manuscript falls under E or G
may m the context of another be more appropriately as-
signed to F or H.

Wherever possible and functional, the list of decora-
tions indicates where or in which part of a manuscript
each decoration appears. In most cases the illustrations
follow the sequence in which they appear in the manu-
script, rather than their order in the catalogue. Because of
the large number of illustrations (719 monochrome and
23 colour plates), we have dispensed with long, detailed
stylistic descriptions.

Manuscript descriptions

The descriptions of the manuscripts have been kept as
short as possible:

-nbsp;The Catalogue Number (nrs. 1-181) is followed, in the
case of manuscripts acquired before 1909, by the serial
number in the Catalogus codicum manu scriptorum BibliotUe-
cae Universitatis Rheno-Trajectinae, 2 vols. (Utrecht, etc.
1887-1909), and, in parenthesis, the shelf-mark. Manu-
scripts acquired after 1909 have only the shelf-mark un-
der which they are recorded in the card file entitled Sup-
plement Handschriftencatalogus.

A Concordance of serial numbers/shelf-marks and
their numbers in this catalogue follows on p. 50.

-nbsp;Names of authors of Latin texts have where possible
been given in their Latin forms. In some cases, however,
the English form has been chosen, as in 'Bernard of Clair-
vaux' rather than 'Bernardus Claravallcnsis'. The text of
a manuscript is always in Latin unless it is explicitly in-
dicated that this is not the case. Liturgical manuscripts,
however, are identified by their English terms: 'Missal',
'Gradual', 'Andphonary' etc., and 'Book of Hours', 'Bi-
ble' etc.

An Index of Authors and Texts follows on p. 66-67.

-nbsp;Approximations of places or dates of origin ('North-
ern Netherlands', 'Italy' etc.; '2nd half of 15th cent.' etc.)
are naturally based on interpretation. When a specific
place name or date is given, this information appears in
the manuscript itself, generally in the colophon. Where
a place name and/or date is placed in brackets [], that
allocation is based on external data. Where doubt exists as
to the accuracy of such information it is placed in paren-
thesis with a question mark.

In the chronological order in which the manuscripts
are presented, those whose dating can only be estimated
approximately have been inserted at the year in the
middle of the period conccrncd. Thus a manuscript dated
to the '3rd quarter of the 15th cent.' appears before a
manuscript of 1463 and after one dated 1462.

An Index of Origins follows on p. 68.

-nbsp;The first line of the codicological description identifies
(i) the writing material (vellum or paper); (2) the num-
ber of leaves in the book block (endpapers are disregar-
ded unless there is some special reason for mentioning
them, in which case the number of endpapers appears in
parenthesis); (3) the dimensions of the leaves, followed
by the dimensions of the wridng area in parenthesis; (4)

the number of columns in which the text is written, if
more than one.

-nbsp;Scribe: the name of the copyist as it occurs in the manu-
script itself. 34 manuscripts are signed in this way, usually
in the colophon. An Index of Scribes follows on p. 65.

-nbsp;Script: the type of script, on the basis of the nomencla-
ture devised by Prof. G.1. Lieftinck and further develop-
ed by Prof. J.P. Gumbert. A recent exposition of the use
of this nomenclature will be found in cmd-nl 2J The
scripts occurring in the manuscripts in this catalogue fall
into the following categories: (Late) Carolingian minus-
cule, Pregoüca, Textuahs (formata, libraria and currens),
Cursiva (a-cursiva, hbraria and currens), Hybrida (hbra-
ria and currens), Lettre Bourguignonne, Humanistic
minuscule, and Itahan rotunda.

-nbsp;Binding: where a date appears in the concise description
of the binding, this is an indicadon that the binding is not
o.iginal. Where no date is given the binding is contem-
porary or almost so.

-nbsp;Provenance: all known successive owners of each work,
with dates indicated in parenthesis. An Index of Prove-
nances follows on pp. 69-70.

-nbsp;Artist: with few exceprions, the artists are idenrified
only by names of convenience, referring to artisüc person-
alities reconstructed on the basis of attribudons. Nearly
all the attribudons here are from existing hterature. One
artist who is known to have illustrated other manuscripts
as well is 'Sp[ier]i[n]c' (cat. nr. 131; ms 1040). According
to the colophon on fol. 95r, the same man also wrote the
text. An Index of Artists follows on p. 65.

-nbsp;Literature: all known references to literature on or rele-
vant to the illumination of the manuscript concerned.
Textual criticism has generally been omitted. In the case
of the manuscripts that also appear in the exhibidon cata-
logue Handschriften en Oude Drukken (1984), some of the
less important literature listed there has been omitted.

References to the Hterature are given in abbreviated
form. A list of Literature cited in Abbreviated Form fol-
lows on pp. 72-75. An exception has been made in the
case of master's essays {doctoraalscripties) dealing solely
with an individual manuscript. These are cited in full un-
der the entry on that manuscript.

-nbsp;Note: miscellaneous subjects including:

-nbsp;missing leaves, miniatures or initials

-nbsp;serious damage (e.g. nrs. 157, 172)

-nbsp;miniatures on inserted leaves (e.g. nrs. 25, 43, 59, 68,

The Notes also contain references to similar or related
illuminadon or decoration, both in the University Library
and elsewhere (e.g. nrs. 25, 42, 43, 55, 59, 60, 75, 100,
104, 119 and 133; see the 'Index of Manuscripts cited' on
p. 71). Some of these comparisons have led to the estab-
lishment or confirmation of precise datings or locahza-
tions.

An example of this are the four undated manuscripts in
a group of five whose decoradons are clearly related (nrs.
120-124) and that were all made in the monastery of the
Regular canons in Utrecht. The entire group can now be
dated about 1495 on the basis of an expHcit date in one of
the manuscripts in the group (nr. 124). Similarly, nr. 79
can more confidently be assigned to the eastern part of
the Netherlands, and possibly to Deventer, because the
penwork in the first three volumes of the manuscript
(1465-1472) closely resembles that in nr. 80, which is
known to have been made in Deventer in 1466.

Similar relationships could also be idendfied between
nrs. 10 and 11; 62 and 73; 65, 67, 72 and 74; 67, 68, 69 and
71; 72, loi and 102; 82 and iii; 98 and 99; 114 and 119;
116, 117 and 118; and between 126 and 129.

Nevertheless it will be clear that any conclusions based
on such relationships must be treated with considerable
caution. This is true of border and penwork decoration
even more than miniatures or historiated initials. One
reason for this is purely technical: for a practised hand it
cannot have been too difficult to emulate a particular
manner of penwork that happened to be in favour at any
given moment. Only the most penetrating and detailed
study can determine the characteristics of individual
hands. Another reason has to do with the size and nature
of the cultural area where most of the manuscripts in this
catalogue originated. The Northern Netherlands are
small, and the mobihty of the craftsmen engaged in the
process of book production - both laity and clergy - was
considerable. These circumstances complicate the search
for stable, autonomous and unique styles of penwork and
border decoration and the attempt to attribute them to
one hand, atelier, scriptorium, town or even region. At
best, we can hope to put our finger on the brief periods
when a new or original style was still being used by a
single artist or group of artists in a known place, before it
underwent further development and dispersion. Art his-
torians have indeed succeeded in isolating several clearly
distinguishable styles in their germinal phases. Whether
they can build upon these successes to chart the entire
flow of late medieval decorative styles is a moot point.
We may well discover, in the attempt to do so, that the
rapid diffusion of styles through the artists and scriptoria
of the Netherlands comphcate the task to a greater degree
than we now reaHze. We may have to resign ourselves to
greater uncertainty in this field than we would like.

In this situation, we are more dependent than ever on
concrete data concerning the place and date of manu-
scripts in which particular decorative styles manifest
themselves. Thanks to its early history, the Utrecht Uni-
versity Library contains a comparatively high proportion
of documented manuscripts with decorative elements. No
fewer than forty of the 181 manuscripts in the catalogue
are dated. More than 90 are localized with absolute or

near certainty. It is tliis unique feature that makes the
manuscript collection of Utrecht University Library so
valuable for the history of art.

In completing this catalogue it is a great pleasure to ex-
press my thanks first of all to Dorine Proske-van Heerdt,
who for a period of several months wilhngly took on
much of the work involved in its preparation. With her
energy and infectious enthusiasm she made a substantial
contribution to this catalogue.

My warmly felt thanks go also to Dr M.P. van Buijte-
nen, A.R.A. Croiset van Uchelen, Dr Gisela Gerritsen-

Representations with identifiable subjects, all of which
have been reproduced, are divided into the following

A - Miniatures

A' — Drawings related to the text, such as tombstones,

surgical instruments, groundplans, etc.
