INDEX SEMINUM ATQUE SPORARUM 1981 / 1982
-ocr page 4-
- 2 -
With the presentation of this seed list we take the opportunity to inform you of some matters that might be of interest to be known.
Within some years the complete Faculty of Biology will be concentrated in the new University Centre quot;De Uithofquot;, where now only our systematic garden and rock garden are situated. In an advanced stage we are planning to enlarge the present garden in quot;De Uithofquot; and to house there the collections and all other activities of the Cantonspark, Sandwyck Estate and the old botanic garden now in the centre of Utrecht.
The computerisation of collection-data is now nearly finished and all information will be available within the next future. All Dutch university botanic gardens cooperate in this computerisation and use the same program for this project.
Another project of cooperation in which the Dutch university botanic gardens are engaged at the moment concerns a further specialization of the collections by which certain main points and special fields of interest are formed.
The taxonomists specialise themselves in the taxa involved and will render assistance with identifications of these taxa in other gardens. They also offer each other duplicates of their special topics if desired. The Utrecht Botanic Gardens will further develop and maintain interest in the following groups and taxa: Alpines, Ferns (Polypodiaceae), Gesneriaceae, Moraceae (Cecropia, Ficus, Dorstenia), Orchidaceae (neotropical), Zingiberaceae (neotropical), Annonaceae (neotropical), Coniferae, Aceraceae, Betulaceae, Ericaceae, Berberis, Euonymus and Magnolia.
At this moment most attention is given to Acer, Betula, Laburnum, Cecropia, Dorstenia, Ficus and neotropical Annonaceae.
We are especially interested in material from natural sources of the mentioned groups and taxa and we will be much obliged if (besides the material from your seed-catalogue) you can supply us with other species or call our attention to special stocks in your collections.
-ocr page 5-
Considering the large collections of plants in our gardens it is assumed they can only be partly evaluated by the publication of a seed list. At present we are converting our card index into a computerized system, taking up all the plant material in the five departments of our gardens.
From 1977 onwards our seed list is issued only once every two years. You are therefore kindly requested to keep the present list for your reference in 1982 and 1983.
After a transgression period the computer system will accumulate all relevant data. A computer print-out will be mailed every five years in principle. Within some years we hope to store our seeds in a seed bank from where they become available upon request.
The Staff of our botanical gardens is composed as follows:
Dr. P.C. de Jong nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Director
B.G. Kroese nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Superintendent
Drs. E.A. Mennega nbsp;nbsp;Taxonomist
J. Tolsma nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Curator of collections
All requests for seeds and spores, duly marked on the enclosed numbered list should be addressed to:
University Botanical Gardens Heidelberglaan 2, 3508 TC UTRECHT
The Netherlands
All requests for seeds and spores reaching us before April 1982 will be handled in rotation of entry dates. Requests reaching us after that date will be sent out in the beginning of 1983.
Owing to the severe spring frost, at the end of April 1981, the seed harvest has been smaller than usual. The seed batches sent out this year will be limited in size and number.
