AnnotationDate of publication taken from Van Someren (Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht. Pamfletten). Place of publication taken from Weller. A satirical vindication by Fraçois Hotman of Henry IV and Condé from their excommunication by Pope Sixtus V. It advocated the abolition of Salic law and proposed that the French monarchy should be elective. The papacy took this popular squib very seriously and put it in the first class of the Index. The bull of Sixtus V ([14] pages following page 234) has a separate title page: Sanctiss. D.N. Sixti Papae V. declaratio, Contra Henricum Borbonium assertum Regem Nauarre, & Henricum item Borbonium, praetensum Principem Condensem, haereticos, eorumq́[ue] posteros & successores: ac liberatio subditorum, ab omni fidelitatis & obsequij debito. Romae. Apud Haeredes Antonij Bladij Impressores Camerales. M.D.LXXXV. This work also published under imprint: "Lugduni Batauorum, ex officina Ioannis Paetsij. Anno M.D. LXXXVI." (see: Short Title Catalogue Netherlands, no. 840034059). Includes index. Errata on recto of leaf Q8. Woodcut illustration on recto of leaf Q4. Signatures: A-Q⁸. Contains an initial and a head-piece. Errors in pagination: page 17 numbered 37; page 136 numbered 36; page 219 numbered 119. Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachbereich erschienenen Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts (VD 16), Adams, H.M.
