AnnotationAn attack on the Dutch West-India Company, including the administration of the colony of New Netherland, written in form of a conversation between a skipper and nine other persons. "Earliest separate publication about affairs in New Netherland ... " - Cf. Stokes, P. The iconography of Manhattan Island, p. 259. Attributed by some authorities to Cornelis Melyn. For a discussion of circumstances of publication and authorship cf. G.M. Asher, A bibl. and hist. essay on the Dutch books ... relating to New Netherland, Amsterdam, 1854-67, p. 183-200. The title-page ascribes authorship to "I.A." followed by the initials "G.W.C." "The only person prominent enough in New Amsterdam, who could have had sufficient inside knowledge of the affairs [of the West-Indische Compagnie], and whose name fits the initials was Isaac Allerton ... but it is inconceivable that he had anything to do with the composition of the tract. The initials "G. W. C." may well mean Geoctroyeerde West-Indische Compagnie ..." Stokes, p. 259. Imprint fictitious? Tiele suggests that it may have been printed by Jan van Hilten of Amsterdam -- Cf. Tiele 3531. Signatures: A-F⁴ (F4 verso blank). Printed in black letter. Asher, G.M. Bibliographical and historical essay on the Dutch books and pamphlets relating to New-Netherland, Knuttel, W.P.C.
