Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM LXXX (81), f. 48r.
In the center of the heavens the beardless, cross-nimbed Christ-Logos is seated within a globe-mandorla. He holds an open scroll, the 'statute' and 'testimony' (verses 5-6, (4-5)), in His left hand and is attended by six angels with wands. In the register below, the psalmist at the left exhorts a dancer and four musicians with psaltery, harp, and tubas to make 'a joyful noise' before the Lord (verses 2-4, (1-3)) in front of a tabernacle with drawn curtains revealing a hanging lamp. In the lowest register a group of horsemen, the enemy (verse 15, (14)), is charging against the Israelites. Some of these Israelites are cutting grain, others are gathering honey from hives out of which bees are flying. These episodes are suggested by verse 17, (16): 'He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat; and with honey out of the rock ...'). The latter part of this phrase is also illustrated by Moses smiting the rock to give water to a group of men, women and children who are beseeching him for help (verse 8, (7)). At the extreme right another group is worshiping the golden calf (verse 10, (9)).
