Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM XCIV (95), f. 55v.
The psalmist with his back turned and holding a book is giving command to praise the Lord, who appears as the beardless cross-nimbed Christ-Logos standing within a mandorla with six angels in attendance. Below the Christ-Logos is a city gate with heathen gods on the walls ('... a great king above all gods,' verse 3). A bull and a sheep, the sacrificial animals, are placed on small pedestals beside these gods. On the hilltops to right and left (verse 4) are groups of the faithful who are coming 'before his presence with thanksgiving' and are making 'a joyful noise unto him with psalms' (verse 2). Below on the right side another group comes to 'kneel down before the Lord,' their maker. Above them is a group of sheep suggested by '... and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand' (verse 7 ) . On the left side Moses is smiting the rock from which water flows. Aaron and the children of Israel are behind him ('... as in the day of temptation in the wilderness when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work,' verses 8-9). The water from the rock flows into a sea filled with fishes which extends across the bottom of the picture (verse 5).
