Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM XXX (31), f. 17r.
In the upper right, a huge scarf or curtain swung between two towers of a walled enclosure ('mea fortitudo,' verse 4, (3) and 22(21)) shelters 'them that trust in thee' standing within a tabernacle (verses 20, (19) and 21, (20)). The saints stand to the left outside the wall (verse 24), and a group of the enemy or persecutors to the right (verse 14, (13)). The beardless, nimbed Christ-Logos attended by three angels leans from the ramparts to direct another angel to succor the psalmist rushing with outstretched arms towards Him. Rays stream from the Christ-Logos towards the people. At the psalmist's feet a net is spread over a pit containing two demons (verse 5, (4)). Behind him another demon with snaky locks is dragging into a fiery pit the enemy according to the appeal of the psalmist (verses 16, (15) and 18, (17)). A corpse in a sarcophagus and a broken vessel lie on the ground at the angel's feet (verse 13, (12): 'I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel'). In the lower right, a large crowd surrounds a dancing bear and an acrobatic troupe, one of them plays on pipes, and another dances with castanets (verse 7, (6): 'them that regard lying vanities').
