Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM XXXV (36), f. 20v.
The beardless, cross-nimbed Christ-Logos is seated in a globe-mandorla placed in the middle of the heavens and flanked by six angels (verse 6, (5)). Mountains and hills on either side are cleft by a deep abyss. Groups of 'men' are seated on the mountains to right and left, and 'beasts' are grazing in the abyss (verse 7, (6)). In the space between the mountains beneath the Christ-Logos a gabled portico, within which an angel spreads his wings over five of 'the children of men' (verse 8, (7)), is flanked by quatrefoil fountains from which birds spout water into goblets extended by groups of men (verses 9, (8) and 10, (9)). Below the fountain at the right the psalmist stands gazing up at the Christ-Logos. To the left are 'the workers of iniquity,' who are driven into a pit by an angel with a spear (verses 12, (11) and 13, (12)). To the right the unjust 'hath devised iniquity on his bed;' two pairs are kissing each other (verse 5, (4)).
