Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM XXXVIII (39), f. 22v.
The psalmist stands beside a bed in the upper center of the picture, covering his mouth with his hands. A vessel containing fire hangs from his arm (verse 4, (3): 'while I was musing the fire burned'), and a pouch is slung from his left shoulder. Before him are three demons; one holds a trident, the second a measuring tape, and the third is counting with the fingers of one hand on the palm of the other ('Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth,' verses 5, (4) and 6, (5)). All four are gazing up to the right where the beardless, nimbed Christ-Logos stands within a mandorla attended by three angels. Below the Christ-Logos between two plants there is a spider's web (verse 12 (11)). In the lower part of the picture a king is supervising the gathering and storing of his riches (verse 7, (6)). They are brought in on the backs of animals, are weighed and counted, and are put away in chests in front of treasuries.
