Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM XLVII (48), f. 27v.
The psalmist stands under a tree on a hill to the left with hands outstretched, gazing in wonder across a valley where the 'city of our God' is set on 'the mountain of his holiness' (verse 2, (1) and 9, (8)). 'God is known in her (Zion's) palaces' (verse 4, (3)) and is represented as the beardless, cross-nimbed Christ-Logos holding a globe, standing in the portico of the tabernacle and flanked by people coming out of it. A number of the 'daughters of Judah' have joined hands and are dancing about the hill of Zion, rejoicing according to the text of verse 12, (11). Others of the daughters are talking in a tower of the city ('narrate in turribus eius,' verse 13, (12)). To the left outside the walls, a group of kings bearing gifts is approaching the city (verse 5, (4)); to the right, in a corresponding position, a group of people 'marvel' at the things they see (verse 6, (5)). In the register beneath the psalmist is a 'woman in travail' attended by three other women (verse 7, (6)). At the bottom of the picture 'the ships of Tarshish' are being blown across the sea by two personifications of the winds (verse 8, (7)).
