Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM LI (52), f. 30r.
The title of the psalm influences the illustration. It reads: '... when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech', (I Samuel, xxii, 9). To the left below Saul is enthroned before a gabled building supported on columns. Doeg stands on one side of the throne, and three retainers on the other. To the right above, the bearded, nimbed, Christ-Logos, His right hand making the gesture of speech or blessing, and with a book in His left, is seated within a globe-mandorla. Two angels project from the top of the mandorla. Four of the 'just' or 'saints' (verses 8, (6) and 11, (9)) are seated on benches and cushions on either side of the ChristLogos. The bearded psalmist stands below and points to Him with his left hand. He holds a 'razor', (verse 4, (2)) in his right hand and with the forefinger points to an olive tree (verse 10, (8)) which is placed between him and the group to the left.
