Psalterium Latinum
Commentary

PSALM LIV (55), f. 31r.
The psalmist stands beside a table laden with food 'dulces cibos' (verse 15, (14)) in the center of the picture, and appeals to the Hand of God, issuing from a heaven filled with the crescent moon and stars and by a personification of the sun (verse 6, (5), 11, (10) or 18, (17)), for help against his enemies who are rushing upon him from the left (verses 2-4, (1-3)). On the other side of the table one of the wicked men, holding a scroll and some arrows in his arms, is turning away from the psalmist (verse 22, (21) 'molliti sunt sermones eius super oleum, et ipsi sunt jacula'). In the foreground, deeds of violence are being committed within and without a city wall (verse 11, (10)). Wickedness is continued in a man who practises usury by weighing out money in a pair of scales; a sack lies on the ground beside him (the usura and dolus of the Latin text, verse 12, (11)). To the right a group of the wicked are descending (verse 16, (15)) towards a fiery pit of Hell into which others have been cast (verse 24, (23)). Beside the pit is a well into which a man is falling headlong (verse 10, (9)). In the upper right corner a dove is flying off into the wilderness (verses 7-8, (6-7)).
