AnnotationColophon: Francoforti, Apud Christianum Egenolphum Hadamarium, Anno M.D.XL. [1540] Mense Martio. With woodcut initials and woodcuts of plants and herbs. Includes indexes in Greek, Latin and German. Names of the plants in Greek, Latin and German. Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachbereich erschienenen Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts (VD 16), Pritzel, G.A. Thesaurus literaturae botanicae omnium gentium (1872-1877 edition), Nissen, C. Botanische Buchillustration, Universal short title catalogue, D 2442 2378 522 616903 First edition of Theodor Dorsten's Latin adaptation of Eucharius Rösslin's illustrated German herbal, Kreutterbuch, first published (also by Egenolff) in 1535. It includes about 284 botanical illustrations originally cut for the Rösslin edition, many based on illustrations cut by Hans Weiditz for Otto Brunfels's Herbarium vivae eicones (1530-1536). The present edition appeared in two simultaneous issues, the present issue repeating three of the botanical illustrations on the title-page and the other instead showing Egenolff's woodcut burning heart device (see USTC 616902): most catalogues do not distinguish the two. The VD16 (Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachbereicherschienenen Drucke des 16. Jahrhunderts) distinguishes the two issues (see D 2442 and D 2443). Translate
